Chozogakure
Village hidden in Crags

Chozogakure is dubbed the "Village hidden in Crags" due to their many generation long custom of exile and imprisonment. While the two other major villages, Johogakure and Shikigakure have lush forests and fertile land, Chozogakure is located in a dessert climate. Due to this, the village itself was built in what was once a large oasis, having run dry several generations ago. Since then, the dried oasis had become a deep ravine which supported its own kind of life. The village was build above it, seals were added in countless protected places and the chasm beneath the village was what became known as the "Valley of Judgment" There is only one entrance and one exit to the Valley of Judgment, in the center of the village's highest rising rock. Known as the "Judge" A rock in the shape of a stern old bald man.

The "Judge" was actually the village's first Chozokage. An elderly Senju man who had been a veteran of many wars with the Uchiha clan. Once Johogakure had been established, the elderly man named Remuru Senju convinced his clan to join Chozogakure while the village was still in its infancy. With his skill and seasoned battled with his rival clan, he used his position and authority in the Senju clan and secure the role of Chozokage. A large reason his clan holds power within the village is that their ability to grow trees in the dessert environment is indispensable. With his position of authority solid, he focused the whole village's efforts to retaliating against the now whole village of Johogakure instead of just the Uchiha clan.

Remuru was a stern and heartless man, using the newly formed Valley of Judgment as a prison to send criminals and prisoners of war. None who entered the Valley of Judgment, have ever been seen again. Remuru used this iconic symbol of his village to instill loyalty through fear, as well as ward off would-be attackers to the village. The Valley of Judgment was so notorious that even the warring rival village of Johogakure would send their own dangerous criminals there to be exiled. Shikigakure too, would send criminals to Chozogakure to exile. This was how the fragile alliance with Shikigakure was established. As the neutral village never participated in their wars with Johogakure, Chozogakure and its first Chozokage was content to broker a treaty with the village of Shikigakure. Although he had made a treaty with Shikigakure, he made many attempts to invade Shikigakure in order to kill wounded Johogakure shinobi being treated in Shikigakure's lands. This hostility eventually lead to Remuru being poisoned and dying: the event is still widely known, but many of CHozogakure's villagers had feared their own kage. Relieved and grateful to the first princess Shikage, Remuru's death had been overlooked and a lesson had been learned. Don't anger the neutral village, lest they side with Johogakure.

The most notable event between these two villages was what is famously known as the "One Year War". Three generations ago, just after Nerumu Uchiha's death, Chozogakure saw weakness in Johogakure. This assumed weakness turned into a full blown war between the villages, where they waged war in the neutral lands between the two nations. Many shinobi from both sides died, but worse- the majority of rural and peaceful villages, their people and even the animals were massacred. That is to say, the war between the two villages ravaged the neutral lands between their borders. It is called the One Year War because the survivors of that war, can recall mounds of countless bodies. The neutral lands between the two villages still hold much hostility towards both villages.

Geography

Chozogakure's climate is typically hot. The environment is that or mostly sand, with large jutting rock formations here and there. These rock formations are believed to be part of a mountain-range, completely buried beneath the sands. Sparse water sources can be found, mostly small oasis and two large bodies of water close to the center of the land. Mirages and sand pirates are a more common sight than water or vegetation in this land. A famous resource in this land are crystals and rare metals that can be gathered from these buried mountain-ranges.

Ruins of Chozogakure
Return of Exiles

Chozogakure was dubbed the "Village hidden in Crags" due to their many generation long custom of exile and imprisonment. The Valley of Judgment was a place separated from the outside world, with only one entrance and exit. An underground chasm which was fully and carefully constructed and sealed with powerful Fuinjutsu to prevent escape. To the very last day of the village, not one prisoner was recorded to have ever escaped the Valley of Judgment.

There was one flaw in the initial design of the village's prison however. Since it was located beneath the village of Chozogakure itself, it was impossible to ward the intervention from the outside. Who would intentionally dig into a prison of damnation after all? of course that was impossible, due to the occupation and vigilance of the village and its shinobi.

It was not until the appearance of the Bijuu, Greed, that this generation log tradition, changed. In one day's time, the calamity of a Bijuu destroyed the village and turned the village into ruins. The ravenous beast had run out of humans to eat above the surface, yet it sensed countless twisted souls beneath the ground itself. Injured and hungry, the beast had dug its way deep beneath the depths of Chozogakure's ruins and punched a hole through the Valley of Judgment's Fuinjutsu barrier, shattering the prisoners' chains and illuminating their darkened eyes, to the sun once again.

Some of the prisoners were too old or too weak, the result from years of imprisonment for various crimes. The rest, well. They were the worst of the worst. Although initially started by the sudden invasion of the Bijuu on their supposed impenetrable prison, the prisoners quickly gathered their wits. Their desire to escape, far greater than staying... Especially with an unknown giant monster having dug through he ground and was eating the prisoners left and right. The had no honor, no obligations to stay or defend anything. They scattered and quickly found the surface. Countless shinobi of various ranks and age, poured onto the top of the sands in the ruins of Chozogakure and were dumbstruck by the destruction they witnessed. Some laughed, it was fitting for Chozogakure to have such an end. others secretly mourned, for possible family they may have had in the village. only one thing was certain to each and every one of them... They were marked prisoners, the damned... They couldn't stay in the desert. With a tattoo upon their faces that would not come off, they would scatter to the wind. Some of them banded together, while others went their separate ways. Soon, the shinobi world, would feel the after-effects of the Exiles being free.
